The Great F.AVE Read 100 list

9/14/2018

Here it is! The list you've been waiting for! What are F.AVE students going to be reading this year? Check out our most nominated titles below.

In October, I will be looking for students who are taking a risk on a book, reading something out of their normal scope to record a book talk, write a short blog, tell us all about how their risk-taking behavior paid off!

As the year goes by, I will be looking for students who:
  • found a book that taught them something new, made them more knowledgeable about a topic
  • read a book that opened their mind to a different point of view
  • read a book that really made them think and reflect on the book after they finished reading it
  • read a book that made them ask questions
  • read a book that educated them about another culture

This year our theme in the F.AVE Media Center is The Great F.AVE Read! We are going to pull from The Great American Read list and add books of our own to make a list of 100 books.

I can't wait to introduce this to students and teachers, create our list, and start our challenge!

2018 Student newbery films

It's that time of year again! My Newbery Book Club students created media presentations about some of their favorite Newbery winners. We have book trailers, 90 Second Newbery Films, and even an audio podcast this year.

This year, students read the two most current winners: The Girl Who Drank the Moon, by Kelly Barnhill and Hello, Universe, by Erin Entrada Kelly. Both got high marks from all students. We read Bud, Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis and then got to meet him when he came to F.AVE in October. Students got to choose a winning book from the 1990s, a "classic" winner, and a non-fiction Newbery winner. We looked at the criteria that the Newbery committees use to make their choices, and we evaluated books using that criteria. Students discussed their books and did different projects through-out the year. Their culminating project is a media presentation on a Newbery book of their choice.

Check out our wonderful presentations below!

Hi everyone!

Firstly, Happy National School Library Month! We are continuing our F.AVE tradition of hiding Golden Tickets in our books for kids to find! Check out all the details below and see our winners!

Secondly, we have a 2018 F.AVE March Madness champion! Not a huge surprise, but Wonder, by R.J. Palacio edged out the classic A Wrinkle in Time to win! Wonder has been a perennial bridesmaid in the past, often losing to a Harry Potter book, but I think the movie put it over the top this year!

It's official! The heavy hitters are beaten. F.AVE has it's own Cinderella this year...A Wrinkle in Time, which hasn't had a win since the 1960s...must be all that Hollywood money!

Harry Potter is out, and Wonder and A Wrinkle in Time are fighting it out for the title of F.AVE's favorite book!

Vote by tomorrow, students!

The students have voted, and the Final Four is chosen! No real upsets in our March Madness, although one book is a relative newcomer to this level of competition! We have a classic science fiction teacher favorite, a realistic fiction fan favorite, and the bookends of the ever present, well-loved Harry Potter series. I'm torn! Who do I want to win?

Students can vote through Wednesday, March 28th in Google Classroom or from the media center website! We will choose our F.AVE Champion before spring break.
