Students who do not read over the summer lose about three months of reading growth! That means that if you do not read during all of your summer breaks, you could lose two years of reading growth by the end of elementary school! Kids who read at least six books over the summer will maintain or improve their reading progress!

Here’s the good news… It doesn’t matter what you read over the summer, as long as you are reading something!
- Do you love comics? Read them!
- Do you love magazines? Read them!
- Do you love gaming manuals? Read them!

Participate in some of the community summer reading programs. It's a great way to keep reading and earn fun prizes!
- Rising 4th Graders & Rising 5th Graders - GA Book Award Books - Rising 5th Graders will have a chance to try out for the reading bowl team next year! Get a head start on those books!
- Rising 6th Graders -try reading some of the GA Book Award Nominees for 6-8 grades!

Our own F.AVE library collection has many ebooks available for student use.
F.AVE ebooks are not available yet for rising 3rd graders unfortunately, unless you used it in 2nd grade.

Get a Public library card!
How to Get a Library Card with the DeKalb County Public Library
- Instructions for how to register for a library card are here.
- Fill out this online registration form with your family!
- Log in with your DeKalb library account
- Search for books you want to read
- When you find something you want to read, click on "Place Request" > choose the library you want to pick up your books from (probably "Decatur") > click "Submit"
- You may have to click "Continue" on the next page
- Once your books are ready for pickup, they will text or email you
- Go get them with a parent/guardian who will need their ID!
Your library card also gives you access to the Georgia Public Library Service & the 15,000 free ebooks and audiobook available there. Click the pictures above to learn more.
