Before I post all the amazing student projects, I want to celebrate all the reading that our students have done this year. We began the year reading last year's Newbery Winner, When You Trap a Tiger, by Tae Keller, which students overwhelmingly loved.
We then read books by authors who have won multiple Newbery awards (medals or honors). One group read Turtle in Paradise, by Jennifer Holm and the other read Bud, Not Buddy, by Christopher Paul Curtis. While both books were liked overall, the students who read Turtle in Paradise seemed very passionate about it and recommended it over and over again to other kids, increasing its circulation in the library this year. You can tell they loved both of these books, due to the number of projects about them below.
After that, we read a non-fiction Newbery, a Mock Newbery book, a Black history related Newbery book, then a "forgotten" Newbery. Interested in what that looked like? I've attached the documents below.
And, of course, we read the 2022 Newbery winner The Last Cuentista, by Donna Barbra Higuera. I believe this was our most popular book. We ALL just loved how she wove science fiction together with traditional storytelling. It was suspenseful, sad, and wonderful. We are kinda hoping for a sequel.
