GR8 Reads Book Club
Newbery Book Club meetings will be held on the first Wednesday of the month after school until 3:30, unless otherwise noted. See below for this year's dates and the books to read for each one!
  • October 2 - 2024 Newbery winners:  All students should read The Eyes and the Impossible by Dave Eggers. If they have already read that, choose one of the  2024 Honor Winners below: Eagle Drums, by Nasugraq Rainey Hopson, Elf Dog and Owl Head, by M.T. Anderson, Mexikid: A Graphic Memoir, by Pedro Martín, Simon Sort of Says, by Erin Bow, The Many Assassinations of Samir, Seller of Dreams, by Daniel Nayeri
  • November 6 - Author Study OR 1990s Newbery titles - we will choose at our first meeting
  • December 4 - non-fiction Newbery winner - student choice of which non-fiction title
  • *No January meeting due to winter break
  • February 5 - Mock Newbery - We will read a book that experts think MIGHT win the Newbery this year - student choice
  • March 5 - classic Newbery - student choice​
  • April 2 - newly awarded 2025 Newbery winners, either medal or honor book
  • May 7 - Forgotten Newberys - one of my favorite months!
  • *May 14 - Media Festival Day
*NOT First Wednesday of the month

  • January 15 - Best of 2024/Mock Newbery - Possible Newbery Winner for 2025
  • No February Meeting due to February Break & Early Release
  • March 19 -2024 Asian/Pacific American Award for Literature - Continental Drifter by Cathy MacLeod 
  • April 16 - 2024 GA Children’s Book Award - TBA March 2024
Alternative Spring Choice (if one book wins multiple awards) - National Book Award Winner or Coretta Scott King Winner

All of the titles below are recommended for students in either grades 3-6 or 5-8. Please read the descriptions carefully and choose a book that sounds appropriate for your age and interests.
