Then we thought: what a wonderful way to honor our friend, Marty McKinnon. Marty spent 15 years of his life working with kids in City Schools of Decatur, and he loved his time in the media center. Would the Decatur Education Foundation consider funding this project if we applied for a grant? YES, they would! What if we made it a fundraiser to benefit kidney cancer? F.AVE students and faculty stepped up, raising almost $500 that was donated to the American Cancer Society in Marty's honor.
Thanks to all the people who took this dream, those brainstorms that Tara and I came up with, creating Pinterest boards and collaborative Google Docs, and turned them into more than we thought possible. Eric Feiss, for getting the ball rolling with a 3D design. Landon Smith, our insanely talented carpenter, for taking that drawing and looking at our Pinterest board and building a truly unique structure with his own flair and design touches.. Amy & Colleen, our art teachers, who have more talent in their little fingers than I could hope to ever have. They didn't just design each box according to their Hogwarts house, they added incredible details to look for (look at the bottom of the boxes, the eaves, the doorways). We see the Forbidden Forest, the Burrow, Hogwarts, Hagrid's Hut, Slytherin, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, & Gryffindor. We see iconic symbols, beloved quotes, and hidden surprises (look at the bottom of each box). I am awed and inspired by this creation and so proud to have been a part of the creative process.
